Broken spring?
Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken
- A loud bang from the garage, like a gunshot
- A visible gap in the spring above the door
- Opener hums but the door stays shut
- Door lifts only 6 to 12 inches, then stops
- Door feels extremely heavy by hand
- Door rises crooked or jerks
- Door slams shut instead of lowering slowly
- Loose or hanging cables
Spring Replacement Done Right
Springs are not one size fits all. The right spring depends on the door's weight and height and on the drum size. A spring that is too weak makes the opener work too hard, and one that is too strong lets the door fly up.
We measure your door, fit springs rated for its weight, wind them to the correct tension and then test the balance. A well-balanced door stays put when lifted halfway by hand. We also lubricate the hardware and check the cables, drums, bearings and opener force settings before we leave.
Torsion Springs vs. Extension Springs
01
Torsion springs
Mounted on a steel shaft above the door, they twist to lift it. They are smooth and quiet and standard on most homes built in Valencia, Saugus and Stevenson Ranch over the last few decades. Many double doors use two.
02
Extension springs
Mounted along the horizontal tracks, they stretch as the door closes. They are common on older and single-car doors. They should always have safety cables running through them, and we add them if they are missing.
Ask about high-cycle springs if your family uses the garage as the main entrance. They cost a little more and last much longer.
Why Springs Break
Every spring is rated for a number of cycles. Standard springs are good for about 10,000, which is about seven years at four cycles a day. When a spring reaches the end of that life, the steel fatigues and snaps, often on a cold morning when the metal is stiffest.
Rust, lack of lubrication and a door that is out of balance shorten that life. A broken spring also puts sudden strain on cables, drums and the opener, which is why we inspect them on every spring call.
What Affects the Cost of Spring Replacement
We give you the price before any work starts. It depends on:
- One spring or two. Most double doors use two torsion springs, and replacing both is usually the better value.
- Spring type and size. Torsion or extension, matched to your door's weight and height.
- Cycle rating. High-cycle springs cost a little more and last much longer.
- Other worn parts. Frayed cables, worn drums or bearings found during the inspection, which we always ask about before replacing.

Garage Door Spring FAQs
Look above the closed door. A broken torsion spring has a visible gap a few inches wide. Other signs are a loud bang from the garage, a door that suddenly feels very heavy, an opener that hums or lifts the door only a few inches, and a door that rises crooked.
It is not safe to keep running the opener, and lifting the door by hand means lifting its full weight, often well over 100 pounds. If you must get a car out, pull the emergency release only with the door fully closed and have two people lift it, then leave it open until the spring is replaced.
On doors with two torsion springs, we usually recommend replacing both. They were installed together and have done the same number of cycles, so when one breaks the other is near the end of its life. We will tell you honestly if the second spring still has life in it.
Standard springs are rated for roughly 10,000 cycles, one open and one close each. At four cycles a day that is around seven years. Higher-cycle springs are available for busy households.
Torsion springs mount on a bar above the door and twist to lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks and stretch. Torsion systems are smoother and more common on newer Santa Clarita homes; extension springs are common on older and lighter doors.
